Folks, I arrived in the city of angels a little over a week ago and spent the first days at an acquaintance's place in soi 5, Petchburi road.  The area is cool, just around BTS Phaya Thai and Ratchatewi - BTS is the Skytrain, a very convenient and fast transport system in Bangkok. It's basically 2-3 stops and a little walk to uni but I could also just walk from my place which would take me approx 30 minutes (still need getting used to the heat, though). We have loads of shops and food stalls here and the sois (small side roads) are basically crowded until the late hours. There's also a muslim community living here and I hear the muezzin chanting from the mosque every day ;).

 My uni is just off the biggest shopping area with huge and quite famous malls such as MBK, Siam Paragon or Central World. A lot of touists mingle with locals, cheap to extremely expensive products, rip-offs and high fashion, sushi, burgers, Thai food...

Anyway, my start at Chula was pretty good, I got introduced to the head of TEFL department and my advisor who is researching on a similar topic. I'll do some lesson observation soonish and am in the middle of finalising my research plan. End of January I'll attend the Thai TESOL conference with Ted Rodgers giving a presentation on language teaching methodology which is awesome because I know him from the literature I read for my thesis :)! The conference will be in the northern Thai city of Khon Kaen, my advisor is going plus some people from one of her seminars I'm attending, too. We had a good discussion on English language teaching and the challenges of the ASEAN community just yesterday and I'm looking forward to the next meeting. I also took part in TEFL's New Year Party with a lot of fun activities, got to know a couple of people from the M.A. programme and won prizes in quizzes, yay ;)!

I am Julia, a student completing a teaching degree (English, Social Studies and Philosophy/Ethics) and an M.A. in English Education at Ludwig Maximilians University (LMU) Munich, Germany. My final exams are happening in summer/autumn of 2013 and I am planning to work in the educational field afterwards – preferably linking  teaching and research in higher education or working in foreign development assistance.

I’ve been interested in English education in Thailand for over five years now. Everything started with a volunteer stay in Phato in Chumphon province, southern Thailand – an area not open to many tourists. I taught kindergarten and primary school children English for the Thai Child Development Foundation and organised English language holiday camps for the older students.

Back home in Germany I had already collected funds for the small library in Thor Tang school which we refurbished together and equipped with many new Thai and English books. It is still great to see the students use the facilities :).

During this time, I made various observations regarding English schooling in Thailand and got interested in the topic. I stayed in touch with local teachers and went back for research in 2009 to film lessons for my final thesis that dealt with the quality of English language teaching in Thailand. During this stay, I was able to exchange experiences with English teachers and talk to local education authorities.

Now, I am incredibly proud and happy because my university nominated me as an exchange research student meaning that I can attend Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok for research on my M.A. thesis from January to May 2013. Chula is the oldest and most reputable university in Thailand and it is an honour to conduct research on "Communicative English Language Teaching in Thailand" there. In addition, I could count on the support of local scholars whereas previously it was quite difficult to find data particularly on English teacher training in Thailand from Germany. In Bangkok, I could use all the facilities available at the university, conduct interviews … it would be awesome :)!

I’m planning to use this research as a foundation for a PhD in Education Studies at LMU. A professor has already accepted me as a research student in this programme. My research is intended to change the future of English language schooling and inquire whether certain teaching methods can simply be taken from one cultural context to another. In Thailand, for instance, it is not clear whether communicative language teaching, which requires interaction and active participation of both teachers and students, might not clash with the traditional method of stimulus response (“call and answer”) schooling rooted in the Thai culture.

Fortunately, I was awarded a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service and the Bavarian State Government. However, it is too small to cover all expenses and I won’t be able to get a work permit in Thailand with my education visa. In addition, I already have two jobs in Germany because I mainly fund my studies myself and cannot save up any more money. There are no other scholarships I could apply for and student loans are not an option. My last hope was a scholarship from the Thai Ministry of Education but I was unlucky and it was given to students in Economics and Management instead.

Currently, I am lacking around 2000 Euros or $2500 dollars to make Thailand happen. A lot of money if you don’t have it – but actually not that much either! I already searched all scholarship databases, checked LMU’s International Office, looked for loans – nothing applies to this research stay.

The whole situation is really exasperating. I do not want to accept that I will have to give up this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity because of 2000 Euros. An acquaintance of mine suggested starting a crowdfunding blog: "Maybe people will donate something, 100 persons with 20 Euros each would do! I’ll start with giving you 50 Euros!". To be honest, I didn’t know what to think of it at the first. But hey, why simply give in just like that? If even internet acquaintances I have never met want to support me, it might even work out!

Well, the blog does exist now and it might even get somewhere. With your help, I could make this research stay happen and in the best case scenario a lot of people could be helped by this in the long run. Any amount  gets me a little closer to Bangkok. Think about it :)!

Ich bin Julia und studiere an der LMU München Englisch, Sozialkunde und Philosophie/Ethik für das Lehramt an Gymnasien und Didaktik der Englischen Sprache und Literatur, Englische Literaturwissenschaft und Pädagogik auf Magister. Im Sommer und Herbst 2013 werde ich meine Magisterprüfungen und mein Staatsexamen ablegen und möchte dann im Bildungsbereich arbeiten - am liebsten in einer Verbindung aus Forschung und Lehre an der Uni und/oder in der Entwicklungshilfe.

Seit über fünf Jahren beschäftige ich mich mit Englischunterricht in Thailand. Angefangen hat alles 2007 durch einen Freiwilligenaufenthalt in Phato in der Provinz Chumphon im Süden Thailands - da, wo der "Rüssel" ganz schmal wird und sich nur selten Touristen hin verirren: ich habe auf dem Land für die Thai Child Development Foundation Kindergarten- und Grundschulkinder in Englisch unterrichtet und für die älteren SchülerInnen in den Ferien Englischcamps organisiert.
Zu Hause in Deutschland hatte ich bereits Spenden für eine neue kleine Bücherei in der Thor-Tang-Schule gesammelt, die wir gemeinsam renovierten und für die viele neue Bücher angeschafft werden konnten.  Die Bücherei gibt es immer noch und es ist klasse, die Kinder beim Lesen zu sehen :).

Mir ist in dieser Zeit in Sachen Englischunterricht sehr viel aufgefallen, das mein Interesse an diesem Thema geweckt hat. Ich habe den Kontakt zu den LehrerInnen gehalten und bin 2009 noch einmal zur Recherche nach Thailand gereist, um Unterrichtsvideos für meine Zulassungsarbeit zu drehen, die sich mit der Qualität des Englischunterrichts in Thailand beschäftigt hat. Bei diesem Aufenthalt hatte ich auch die Möglichkeit, mich mit Englischlehrkräften auszutauschen und mit Leuten aus der lokalen Schulverwaltung zu sprechen.

Jetzt bin ich unglaublich stolz und glücklich, weil ich von der LMU über das Programm LMUexchange mit einem Kontaktstipendium nominiert wurde, um für meine Magisterarbeit von Januar bis Mai 2013 an der Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok an der Faculty of Education zum Thema "Communicative English Language Teaching in Thailand" zu forschen. Die Chula ist die älteste und renommierteste Uni Thailands und es ist eine kleine Ehre, dass ich dort auf die Unterstützung von führenden thailändischen ForscherInnen zählen darf. Von Deutschland aus war es sehr schwer Materialien besonders zur Englischlehrerbildung in Thailand zu finden und an der Chula hätte ich alles vor Ort, könnte Interviews führen, nachfragen - es wäre großartig :).

Auf dieser Basis möchte ich dann auch meine Promotion in der Schulpädagogik aufbauen, für die ich an der LMU bereits einen Doktorvater gefunden habe. Meine Forschung soll die Praxis verbessern und geht der Überlegung nach, ob man bestimmte Unterrichtsmethoden einfach auf andere kulturelle Kontexte übertragen kann. In Thailand stellt sich zum Beispiel die Frage, ob der kommunikative Englischunterricht, also viel Aktivität der SchülerInnen und LehrerInnen, Gruppenarbeiten, viel "miteinander sprechen", sich nicht vielleicht mit der traditionellen Kultur des Fragens-und-Antwortens beißt, die in der thailändischen Tradition sehr verwurzelt ist.

Glücklicherweise habe ich vom DAAD und der Bayerischen Staatsregierung bereits ein Stipendium bekommen - allerdings deckt dies maximal die Lebenserhaltungskosten vor Ort und weder Flug noch Unterkunft. Ich finanziere mich in Deutschland fast selbst und gebe neben einem Bürojob noch ein Erstsemestertutorium an der LMU. In Thailand bekomme ich keine Arbeitserlaubnis und ansparen kann ich hier unter den aktuellen Umständen auch nichts, da komme ich gerade so über die Runden. Meine letzte Hoffnung, ein Stipendium des thailändischen Ministry of Education, ist leider nichts geworden. Da hatten Studierende des Managements und der BWL mehr Glück.

Mir fehlen momentan ca. 2000 Euro, damit mit Thailand alles klappt. Viel Geld, wenn man es nicht hat - aber eigentlich auch nicht die Welt! Ich habe schon sämtliche Stipendiendatenbanken durchforstet, im International Office der LMU nachgefragt, sogar nach Krediten geschaut - Stipendien gibt es einfach keine, die für meinen Bereich passen und die Kredite passen entweder nicht, oder sollen mit 120 Euro im Monat abgezahlt werden. Wie soll ich das machen, wenn ich mitten in der Promotion stecke und mich mit einem Halbtagsjob durchschlage?

Es ist wirklich zum Verzweifeln und ich kann mich nicht damit abfinden, dass ich diese Chance wegen 2000 Euro aufgeben muss. Eine Bekannte hat mir vorgeschlagen eine Homepage einzurichten. "Vielleicht spendet ja jemand was - wenn das nur 100 Menschen mit je 20 Euro sind, dann ist das Geld drin. Ich fange mit 50 Euro an!". Ich fand das erst ein bisschen gewöhnungsbedürftig, um ehrlich zu sein. Aber hey, einfach so aufgeben? Wenn schon eine Bekannte aus einem Internetforum, die ich noch nie persönlich getroffen habe, meine Sache unterstützenswert findet und mir ihr Geld dafür anvertrauen möchte - eventuell funktioniert es ja doch?

Tja, jetzt gibt es diese Seite und vielleicht kommt ja was bei rum. Mit eurer Hilfe könnte ich den Forschungsaufenthalt doch noch antreten und im besten Fall wird dadurch langfristig vielen Menschen geholfen. Jeder Euro bringt mich Bangkok ein Stück näher - überlegt's euch :)!
